Middlesbrough 1 West Ham 0: Maccarone regains hero status at Boro

HAVING been reminded of the days when they played together at Crystal Palace, and how Alan Pardew used to rib him about everything from his nose to his taste in clothing, Gareth Southgate came up with an insult in return. A late goal by the substitute, Massimo Maccarone, in a match that scarcely deserved one, was the height of cheek. Like Southgate’s nose, it wasn’t pretty, but in the circumstances, he didn’t care. After two straight defeats, Maccarone’s first goal since April lifted Middlesbrough five points clear of the relegation zone, and put a stop to the sequence that was slowly eroding their self-belief. “It was a big win for us,” said the manager. “We knew it would be a bit tense after the last two performances, and we were a bit short of confidence early on, but we were brave enough to play our way through it.” .
