Upson asked to be central character in West Ham's battle for survival

West Ham United have launched a bid to sign Matthew Upson, the Birmingham City centre half, with an offer believed to be £4 million. Birmingham appear to have increased the valuation of a player who has 18 months left on his contract by £2 million to £8 million. West Ham are keen to sign a centre back after losing James Collins and Danny Gabbidon to groin injuries. Collins may need an operation. .
