West Ham to face points deduction?

Today's Daily Mail carries a report on a Premier League investigation into the possibility that West Ham and Portsmouth have fielded ineligible players this season. It is believed Wigan are questioning whether Tevez and Mascherano for the Irons and Pompey's Manuel Fernandez have been used in breach of Premier League rules. The Mail reports: Breaking Rule U18 can result in a points reduction because the League will not allow England`s top-flight clubs to sign players who are owned by a 'third party' who would have the 'ability materially to influence its policies or the performance of its teams'. It suggests fellow relegation strugglers would be willing to launch legal challenges. Javier Mascherano's loan deal to join Liverpool is awaiting Premier League approval - apparently due to a lack of paperwork.
